Back in June, I decided that summer ended when classes begin (August 22nd), and then promptly forgot about that. That is my excuse for not having done a Summer Goals wrap-up yet. I’m only a month overdue. In short, my goals were to:

Use hammock more than last summer. Kind of, but not much. Must set this as a goal for next summer.

Go camping at least once. Total fail. Oh well.

Unpack all boxes (with the exception of the garage and storage areas). There are very few boxes living in the house, so I’ll call this good. There are 3 or 4 in the living room, and I think that’s it. Oh, and a few in my craft room, but that’s to be expected.

Learn to make potstickers. Done. They’re excellent.

Re-establish order and purpose for the garden areas of our house (and the plant life in general). Without doing so to fulfill a goal, we have done this. Tomatoes, peppers, and a hydrangea now occupy spaces that were formerly nothing, an ugly rose bush, and several ugly rose bushes, respectively.

Go out for margaritas with the girls at least once. Yes, I did do this. Only the once (or maybe twice?), but it still counts.

Utilize that gym membership. Perhaps enough to be seen in my bathing suit this year. Ha! I haven’t seen the inside of a gym since April. Maybe earlier. And I haven’t been seen in a swimsuit in years.

Not to get any more than one (preferably zero) bad sunburn (like I said, preferably zero, but I have very white skin and those freckles and red hair don’t help much). I did not get sunburnt this summer, and I am very proud of that.

Go to at least one garage sale. Nope, no garage sales.

Use my sewing machine a few times. A big huge check on this one. I made… two mini quilts, one lap quilt, one dress, and parts of several other projects.

“Finish” my office / craft room. I’m glad finish is in quotes here. It’s mostly done. I still have to do the wall mural I wanted, and build a shelf on which to display things (and also from which to hang all my mini quilts). But it’s quite usable.

Paint (or at the very least decide on colors – it might be too hot to contemplate painting) the master bedroom. Just decided on paint colors for the master bedroom this weekend. Boy, was that a task.

We have plans to refinish the kitchen cabinets. We actually postponed this one so that we didn’t have to start until after September 1. We’re currently experimenting with finishes and our techniques. Once we have that figured out, then it’s a whole lot of elbow grease over the course of several weeks.

I’m going to be honest. I have no Fall goals. And I’m totally OK with that. I will take suggestions, as always, for new foods (ingredients) to try, especially if they’re fall-themed. Or maybe a cooking technique or recipe to try out. But really, we’re still just getting settled in the house, and while I don’t have a ton of homework for my class, I’m having a bit of trouble adjusting to the fact that I can’t just do whatever I want all the time, but instead have to *gasp* buckle down and do homework sometimes.

How did that happen? Maybe we should have something sparkly with dinner to celebrate a whole month in our house.

Instead, let’s wrap up my “Spring Goals.”

Pack up house. Move out of house. Move into new house. Check and double-check.

Finish semester well. Complete all assignments. Get straight A’s. (There are serious rewards involved if I do.) Check (though to be perfectly honest and neurotic, that A- totally haunts me. I can’t help it if I’m insane.).

Do not freak out too much over above potential stresses. Life is an adventure, right? Must keep reminding self that. When all is said and done, both of the above are things that I really want to do, and that we’ve been planning on for quite some time. Just need to take lots of deep breaths, and write a list or two. I don’t think I freaked out that much. can verify (or dispute) this. There were some moments where I wasn’t totally calm, but all in all the move went really smoothly, as did the end of the semester.

Host Easter dinner. Succes = no one getting food poisoning, no injuries requiring more than a Band-aid, and no fights that end with slamming doors. I smell success. Check. No illness, no injuries, no fights. Just a good time had by all (and a very full table of friends and food – a great combination).

Have hammock set up by May 31st in new backyard for some quality relaxation. Oops. I totally didn’t realize I’d made this a goal until just now. This can be remedied tonight, however, so only 24 hours late.

I’m not going to rehash my yearly goals because, to be completely honest, I haven’t thought about them at all. I doubt there’s much to update on.

Do I really want to make goals for the summer? Not really (I think it gets in the way of all that relaxation I’d like to have), but I think I should. (End date: August 22nd, which is when the Fall Semester begins at Metro State.)

Use hammock more than last summer.

Go camping at least once.

Unpack all boxes (with the exception of the garage and storage areas).

Learn to make potstickers.

Re-establish order and purpose for the garden areas of our house (and the plant life in general).

Go out for margaritas with the girls at least once.

Utilize that gym membership. Perhaps enough to be seen in my bathing suit this year.

Not to get any more than one (preferably zero) bad sunburn (like I said, preferably zero, but I have very white skin and those freckles and red hair don’t help much).

Go to at least one garage sale.

Use my sewing machine a few times.

“Finish” my office / craft room.

Paint (or at the very least decide on colors – it might be too hot to contemplate painting) the master bedroom.

We have plans to refinish the kitchen cabinets. This is a very, very large project. Huge, in fact. There are 37 handles and somewhere around 40 hinges, if that is any indicator. Also, we will have to agree upon a stain color. But, it really needs to be done. The last time the cabinets were given any love was when they were installed, 20+ years ago, and there is absolutely no more varnish or any sort of protective covering left. Also, it will look really good when we’re done, and we’ll have learned something. But it’s a bit daunting of a project.

I’m taking suggestions in the comments for summertime-appropriate foods to try. However, it should be noted that fruits should not really be on the list. I’m just not a fan. Sorry.

[Also, I'll get a post up later today about my weekend. Promise.]

(despite the snow on the ground), so it’s time to review my Winter Goals and see how I did.

Go skiing. Um, negative on this one. It just wasn’t as important as everything else. There’s always next year.

Try the following foods: beets, brussel sprouts. Check on the Brussels sprouts (yum) , not so much on the beets (as in, I didn’t try them). Also, I tried a pear, which I didn’t like.

Sew one item of clothing for myself each month. Pretty big fail on this one. I did get most of a dress sewn, but it’s not done yet. There was quilting done, however, and I stayed current with swaps.

Modify one item of clothing from the drawer each month (the drawer of thrift store purchases that don’t fit properly and unfinished sewing projects). Negatory on this one. I only accomplished this in February, when I attempted to take in a cute shirt from the thrift store, and made it too skinny. Oops. I think it might fit if I lost the weight I wanted to.

Take our plecostomus to live somewhere else, as he has been too big and aggressive for our small tank for several months now. Um, yeah, I still haven’t done this. It will get done this month, though, since we have to empty the tank for moving.

Go through closet and dressers and get rid of clothes I no longer wear / no longer fit. Done. Twice, actually. Once early in the year, and then again this past weekend for the Courage Center pickup that’s occurring in our neighborhood tomorrow.

Re-organize kitchen cabinets (again) – this should probably be a spring cleaning goal, but it’s driving me crazy now. I didn’t even remember I’d made this a goal until just now. Totally didn’t do it (obviously). And completely not necessary, since there will be moving soon.

Not to pick up a new hobby. Check. No new hobbies.

Clean out the under-the-bed area in the spare bedroom. Also check. I also cleaned out the drawers in my desk, shredded a year and half’s worth of receipts, and kept my craft area organized (for the most part).

And for those yearly goals…

Work out for 30 minutes every day that I don’t have class (because I’d be setting myself up for failure if I thought I’d make it to the gym on those days). On the off chance that my plans may include some sort of aerobic or cardio-type activity (you know, if we go skiing or sell the house and move or something), that counts as my 30 minutes. “Work out” may be cardio, strength-training, or both. As previously noted, I scrapped this goal while school was in session, because it was insane.

Maximum of 2 visits per week to the hot drink places in the Skyway (the coffee places, the tea place). Successful, every single week.

Drink lots more water. My goal is 70 ounces a day. Not so successful, but working on it. I did ditch my bottled water habit, and have started carrying a water bottle, so I’m getting at least… 13 ounces of water a day (because that’s all it holds at a time, and the water here at work tastes icky). I still need to improve here.

Eat breakfast every day. McDonald’s is not breakfast. “Something that won’t kill me” is a good guideline. Right now, I’m enjoying Carnation Instant Breakfast, though I may have to switch over to Slim Fast at some point during the year for variety. Also successful every single day. Yay me!

Since it’s nearly impossible for me to get enough sleep with my current schedule (in order to get 8 hours, I’d have to be asleep by 9:30, which just isn’t happening), I will stop feeling guilty when I fall asleep on the bus (both to and from work), and enjoy the chance, however short it is, to renew myself. Yes, I’ve given up guilt over sleeping on the bus. I should just cross this one off the list and no longer revisit it.

Remove my makeup every night before going to bed, without exception, even if I’m feeling really really lazy. I will also remember to floss and use mouthwash [more] regularly. Check almost every day (I think there have been a few times when I haven’t taken off my makeup). Gotta remember to work on that floss and mouthwash thing though.

$50/month budget for fabric (notions like zippers, thread, ric rac, rotary cutter blade refills, etc do not count). As previously noted, February was a bust for this, but both January and March I excelled (just about $50 to the penny each month). April will be a $0 spent month, since there is no buying of fabric when fabric is being boxed up.

No yarn buying. I did buy some yarn in January, and actually made stuff out of it, so I think that mitigates the bad. I made two hats (one mine, and the black one that was really nice and warm with cables that I thought looked ridiculous on me? my sister loved, so it’s now hers) and a shrug. After we move, I’m going to work on matching hats for the nephews.

Very little, if any, book buying. I think I did good on this. I don’t remember buying too many books. Maybe a few. Some cookbooks. Not much else.

Very little caffeine. Excellent success on this one. Even when I really miss caffeine, I do not miss its inflammatory effects, so I try not to whine too much.

Eat a more balanced, healthy diet, which may include (gasp) restricting calories until I’m a little more in shape to do serious cardio. Yeah, let’s mark this one as “needs improvement” and move on.

Make time for friends, fun, , relaxing, baking, etc, so that life is not only homework. I will try very hard to make it to every one of ’s “fun days” (or whatever she’s calling her once-a-month get together with friends), assuming that she puts it on her Google calendar so I know when they are in advance (or emails me, or whatever) and can plan homework accordingly. I didn’t do too good at making time this semester. Perhaps I can make up for that failure by calling my friends and asking them to help me move? Yeah, I didn’t think that would fly either. Conveniently, I will have nearly 4 months off this summer, so I should be able to spend some time with friends then.

Sunscreen in the summer, whenever sun may be an issue. Sun has yet to be an issue this year.

Attempt to have a more positive attitude about things, though this is a very blah goal and unspecific and one I’m not terribly motivated for at the moment. The “positive thoughts” habit I am working on currently involves asking myself “are they hurting anyone?” when someone is doing something that is incredibly annoying to me (but doesn’t directly affect me, such as people talking on their cell phones on the bus). Still a work in progress.

So, for being 1/4th of the way through 2009, I feel good about my progress.

Oh, should I make some Spring goals? Let’s see, Spring = April + May in my book. Since April = moving and half of May = moving, and April also = end of the semester, I’m going to keep my goals short and sweet.

Pack up house. Move out of house. Move into new house.

Finish semester well. Complete all assignments. Get straight A’s. (There are serious rewards involved if I do.)

Do not freak out too much over above potential stresses. Life is an adventure, right? Must keep reminding self that. When all is said and done, both of the above are things that I really want to do, and that we’ve been planning on for quite some time. Just need to take lots of deep breaths, and write a list or two.

Host Easter dinner. Succes = no one getting food poisoning, no injuries requiring more than a Band-aid, and no fights that end with slamming doors. I smell success.

Have hammock set up by May 31st in new backyard for some quality relaxation.

Spring seems exciting, doesn’t it?

It’s about time for an end-of-January update for how I’m progressing on my winter goals, right?

I’ve tried brussel sprouts. They were pretty good (I used this recipe). I’m going to make them again, roasted this time (which is what most of the internet claims is the best way to do it). I also tried a pear, which I didn’t enjoy. Still on the list: beets.

Didn’t modify something from the thrift store drawer in January, so that was a fail.

The plecostamus still lives with us.

I did go through my closet and dressers and set aside a stack of clothes I either no longer like or no longer fit. I didn’t really do much with the pile, but they’re not hanging up or in the dressers anymore, so it’s a start.

The kitchen cabinets were reorganized right after the first when we went to the Container Store and bought some storage bins.

No new hobbies.

Under the bed – still not clean.

And life goals:

Two days into the semester I realized that my goal of working out was not going to happen. So I just let it go. Haven’t been since the 6th of January. Don’t really feel bad about that. I think I’ll be lucky if I make it more than once a month. As a result, I’ve been trying to watch what I eat a little more, and have lost 3 whole pounds. 12 more to go (in an ideal world, that is).

I’ve been very good about only getting something hot to drink at work no more than twice a week (and one week, only once!). I think this has contributed some to my weight loss, as well as keeping my wallet fuller.

For the most part, I’ve been drinking more water, though I have had a few days when I was unsuccessful. I’m still at 1 liter instead of 2, but progress is progress.

I eat breakfast every day. Without fail.

Sleeping on the bus is cool; no more guilt about that.

Makeup removed nightly, flossing more (not so good about mouthwash).

In January, I spent about $55 on fabric (goal was no more than $50), which is pretty good really. I know I went over, but not by much. February I’m totally going to fail on this goal, just so you know. Like, failing today at it. Sorry. There’s a sale.

I bought yarn this past weekend, even though I said I wouldn’t. But, here’s the story. I have a hat I made myself that I really like and have gotten used to wearing (not really being a hat person, but it’s cold this winter), but have discovered, much to my chagrin, that I’m kind of allergic to it. It makes my forehead itchy and blotchy. No good. It’s wool, so I’m not surprised, since recently other wool items have been making me itch. So, I decided I needed to make myself a new hat, non-wool, to replace it. The problem I had at the store was twofold: one, the yarn I used for the itchy hat is only 25% wool, and a whole frickin’ lot of yarns have wool in them, and; two, I’ve also been itchy lately from some synthetic fibers (I think, at least, that’s my problem), so I was trying to avoid those, which was beyond difficult. I ended up with 4 different kinds of yarn, 2 skeins each, two synthetic blends, two bamboo blends (one with silk). I’m working on a synthetic one right now, because it’s black and I thought the black hat needed to be finished while it was still dark and wintery.

Staying off caffeine very well.

Bought 2 books this past weekend, for $1 each. Money well spent.

Still need to work on having a more positive attitude.

So, as you can see, I’m still a work in progress. No big surprise there. There’s still plenty of time to keep working on these goals.

My goals for this week? Schedule a much-needed haircut and massage. It’s quite bad on those fronts over here.

I’ll try to get a real update on life with photos posted later today.

Well, we’re halfway through January, and I feel pretty good about my progress on certain goals I have.

I eat breakfast every day. One Saturday I skipped, but otherwise I’ve made the time.

I’ve been drinking more water (except for the last two days, since a knife I’d brought for my lunch pierced my water bottle causing it to leak and die), though not nearly the 70 ounces I would like to. I think I’m up to 32 ounces roughly.

No more feeling guilty for sleeping on the bus. Having a crafting project or something to read is about the only thing that makes me not sleep on the bus, so I’ve been doing that too a bit.

Always removing makeup before bed.

I’ve spent $3.50 of my $50 fabric budget, though that might change this weekend (hopefully not by much).

No yarn buying.

The only books I’ve bought have been some old crafting books on ebay, and they’re quite small (smaller than magazines), and one from Half Price Books.

Still caffeine-free (except for chocolate).

I have been eating healthier, though I can’t yet say that I eat healthy (see the distinction?). Lunches this week have been very healthy (with the exception of the peanut butter with my celery, which is no longer the Reduced Fat Jif I ran out of, but regular, which is a total calorie dump).

I will be seeing my friends this weekend, though I have not been good about keeping in touch via email.

My positive attitude still needs some work.

The goal I’ve failed on has been working out. The first week of January I did pretty good, but then the competing interests of sleep, crafting, and working out before classes started sort of derailed the train. It’s been nearly 10 days since I’ve been. I kinda don’t feel guilty about that, and that’s probably not a good thing. I did weigh myself last week and saw that I last 0.5 pounds, though that could just be standing on the scale slightly differently. Clearly I need to work a bit harder on this.

And, for my winter goals, I’ve:

Completed one item of clothing for January (a wool skirt which I haven’t had the chance to wear yet because it’s been too cold and I’m wary of wearing tights/nylons while still itchy).

Not picked up a new hobby.

Since I have through March to complete these, I feel this is adequate progress.

How are you doing with any goals you might have, or lifestyle changes you’re trying out?

I know you were all chomping at the bit to know how I’m doing on my non-resolutions. I’m pleased to report that today, I ate my entire lunch. Mind you, it was at 3 pm (which is particularly bad for those of us who leave work at 4), but I ate it. And what was this glorious lunch I ate? An apple (with Nutella), carrots (with homemade Ranch dressing), and celery (with expired reduced-fat Jif). Clearly I’m doing OK today for fruits and vegetables, and fiber.

Also, last week I was successful in only going to the hot drink places twice. This week I have only gone once so far (today, and that was because it’s double-stamp Tuesday).

Friday night I was very tired (took a nap after dinner), and didn’t want to go to the gym, so I didn’t. let me pretend it was a school day. Saturday I completely forgot to go until about 9:30 pm, and it was too late by then. Sunday, however, we trekked over there after dinner. And last night I set myself a crafting deadline of 8:30 so that I’d get over there, which I did, all by myself.

I also cut out the skirt that I’m making for January. And then sewed it up. Well, not entirely. I had to stop (after 15 minutes, which is all it took to piece it together – I’m loving this pattern and wondering why I haven’t used it until now!) because I didn’t have elastic for the waist. Now I’m thinking that I’ll borrow the waistband from this pattern and add in a zipper in back instead, because I’m not a huge fan of elastic-waisted skirts. I probably should be, as they’d be easier if I wanted to gain or lose weight, but I’m not.

What else, what else? I finished ‘s fleece jacket a day early (Sunday, and I’d set myself a goal of Monday). I still haven’t finished the scarf that I’m making for myself, though I only have about 18 inches left of blanket stitch. I’m totally hating the floss I picked out (love the way it looks, absolutely horrible stuff to work with), and can’t get motivated to finish it up. I should, however, since it will look nice when done. Oh, and I haven’t bought any fabric yet. Tonight I’m going to the thrift stores after work, however, and if I find some I like, I will buy it, because that’s a time-sensitive matter.

I’ve been doing some behind-the-scenes work here on the blog, not that any of you would notice. But, it’s there, slowly being fixed and tweaked. Let me know if there’s something that bugs you that needs fixing, or if you see something you like!

As I talked about in my 2009 Goals post, I’ve seen some other bloggers do a list of goals for the season. I think this is an excellent idea, especially since they are, at least for me, far more fun than my yearly goals.

This winter (now through March), I’d like to:

Go skiing.

Try the following foods: beets, brussel sprouts

Sew one item of clothing for myself each month

Modify one item of clothing from the drawer each month (the drawer of thrift store purchases that don’t fit properly and unfinished sewing projects)

Take our plecostomus to live somewhere else, as he has been too big and aggressive for our small tank for several months now

Go through closet and dressers and get rid of clothes I no longer wear / no longer fit

Re-organize kitchen cabinets (again) – this should probably be a spring cleaning goal, but it’s driving me crazy now

Not to pick up a new hobby

Clean out the under-the-bed area in the spare bedroom

Last night, I finished ‘s Christmas present. I just have to wrap it. Of course, her birthday present hasn’t been started yet, but the list of outstanding gifts is definitely shrinking. I also made more progress on ‘s scarf, and brought it with me today so I can knit on the bus ride home. I’m hoping I don’t have much more left on it. That leaves the fleece jacket I gave him for Christmas (well, I gave him the pattern, and we went and picked out the fabric together). That’s it – the rest is all done!

Swap-wise I’m on-track too, though I had somehow forgotten completely about a recipe swap that was due the day after Christmas. It’s fixed now, though. I think it’s time to start working on Tom’s quilt for the Mini Quilt-in-a-bag swap, which means deciding on one of the three ideas I had. I think I might be able to get that cut out tonight though. The other “big” project is figuring out what to do for the My Favorite Things swap. The idea is to pick one of the “favorite things” from the Sound of Music song and make it in any way we desire. The person I’m creating this for has her profile filled out and I’ve perused her Flickr stream and her blog and still don’t have any inspiration. I will figure something out – the problem is that it has to be done by January 9th, which doesn’t give me too much time, and all the good ideas I’ve had so far would take much more time than I have.

We did have our last Christmas celebration over the weekend, with , , and , the latter of which loves his new “big boy bed” and was a hoot. He only had one present to open, since had given him money (or given his parents money, I should say), but it was an awesome gift. If you can’t tell from the picture, the screw driver is battery powered and really works, and you get all you need to make a car (two pieces of car “body” and five screws/bolts). got right to work assembling it, and was completely enamored, staying busy while the rest of us opened gifts. gave me exactly what I asked for – a black satin robe and some new canisters for the kitchen. did too – a sweater and some long-sleeved shirts. I was very happy. At some point, all the excitement became too much for , who had been up until midnight the night before, traveling back from Iowa, and he started running around the room yelling something only he could understand. He was very excited. We made our exit at that point (it was nearly 9:30) and left his parents to bathe him and put him to bed.

Sunday we attempted to stimulate the economy by participating in after-Christmas sales, but had absolutely no luck. was trying to find new jeans, but Lucky was out of his size, as usual (though he did determine that he can just order them online and save the shopping trip). I was looking for some casual work pants (preferably cords) and after half a dozen stores and pairs, we left the mall altogether, empty-handed. The pairs I tried on at Old Navy made me look like I was 5 feet tall (instead of 5′ 8″) and unflatteringly curvy, and the pairs I tried on at JCrew, who only had skinny-legged ones, made me look like my hips were transplanted from a very large person. It was very, very bad. As usual, Express has their store set up to make me want to flee the scene without shopping, and Limited, while calm and subdued, has even fewer casual clothes than they used to, which is unfortunate since one of the pairs of cords I’m getting rid of is from them (a Black Friday purchase five years ago that I didn’t even try on).

I will confess that in the midst of yesterday’s productivity, I completely failed to go to the gym. I thought about it at about 9 pm and decided it wasn’t worth it. I also did not eat what I should have. Full disclosure is good, right? Also, my skin no longer likes the lotion I’m using, as I am itchy again, but that’s OK because I am almost out anyways, and needed to buy a new bottle. I’ll just pick something different out – I did make it all the way through two bottles of what I had, which is pretty good for me.

It’s freezing at work (again, though I’m better prepared today), and I’m going to go take my break and get some decaf chai. That means my two visits for the week will be all used up, but Tuesday is double-stamp day, so it’s worth it. I’m not sure how I’m going to keep warm tomorrow though. I have some bags of tea in my desk drawer and there’s hot water in the break room. Doesn’t sound very exciting, but I bet it’ll work.

As if it wasn’t bad enough that my pants are tight because I have a tiny bit of extra weight around my middle, I now have the added problem of an extra few layers of clothing squeezed in there too. It’s long underwear season, which for me means pants (my best pair are REI, but they have a ridiculously high waistband that I have to fold down about three times) and then a tank top or some other shirt under my sweater, tucked into my pants. Boo on that, says the button on my khakis. Not really, but I did expect protesting.

I decided to try the National Body Challenge from Discovery Health in the new year. I wanted to do something after the holidays (it’s just not worth it to try and start now), and then I read about the NBC and thought I’d give it a shot. said he’d do it with me, bless his heart, even though he has absolutely no need to lose weight, because we eat dinner together and it’ll be much easier (for me) if we attempt this together. Details are still sketchy since they haven’t launched the program, but it is being put on by a reputable organization, so I’ll give it a shot. Plus, they emphasize healthy lifestyle changes, not dieting, so that’s good.
