Didn’t I promise you pictures of pretty fabric on Monday? Yeah, I knew when I wrote that it was bad news, but I thought maybe, just maybe, it would motivate me. Alas, the project I chose to work on (the benefit of having finished my homework over the weekend)… not so much pretty. Good, but not what you would consider pretty (unless you really like hot pink jersey).

As for the photos, well, I did the best I could, considering it was late and I was using the timer to take them of myself. There are shadows in everything, but at least I didn’t use the flash!

I'm not so much a hot-pink girl, but I think this works. I feel a bit of freezer-paper stencil embellishment coming on.

I used Simplicity 6902, which is a vintage pattern from 1975. I liked that it was basic, and only required a yard of fabric (I had three such selections of fabric, and its harder than you might think to find adult-sized clothing that only takes a yard of knits).

I traced the pattern pieces (for views 1 & 3) onto my Swedish Tracing Paper, since the whole thing was uncut and in excellent condition (like, barely breathed upon condition). Then I pulled out my favorite t-shirt and lengthened the pieces accordingly. I traced the 10 instead of the 12 because when I held up the shirt I liked to the pieces, they seemed much bigger, and I’m not so much into baggy t-shirts.

Oops, is that my belly showing? Sorry.

As you can see, once it became time to hem this one, I decided to crop it up anyway, and probably a bit too much. That’s OK, though, because part-way through hemming I realized that this was going to have to be a sleep shirt and not a for-public shirt anyway (my machine was being really weird with that bottom hem, and the stitches are a bit wonky; also, I had a hard time hemming the sleeves because I didn’t follow the directions). It was, after all, essentially my muslin to test out the pattern, so it’s all good.

On this shirt, I learned how to do a proper neckline on a knit shirt, which was awesome. I think I’d do it a bit thicker next time, but that’s a small detail. Also, I love these sleeves (imagine them not so baggy). The whole thing went together in a much different order than I’m used to – shoulders, neckline, sleeves, sides, hem – but that really worked and made it easy. Including tracing, cutting, sewing, and hemming, this took me about 3 hours. I think I could get that down a great deal, especially if I decided to do some assembly-line sewing.

I plan on making view 3 (with the puffy sleeves) out of a green tissue knit that is just like the pink here. That might go poorly, since I have mixed feelings on puffy sleeves, but I’m willing to give it a chance. As a side note, I adore this fabric! It’s very lightweight and cozy and yet isn’t see-through (like most tissue knits – isn’t that what they’re called? I’m trying to remember from a few years back when they were all the rage). I might have to see if I can get some more.

On Monday, I mentioned that I spent some time cleaning my office over the weekend. I have some pics to share – be forewarned, though, because I took these late at night, so some are a bit fuzzy. Also, cleaned might not be the right word. Organized is more appropriate. The last picture, for you OCD-types, might make you a bit twitchy. My apologies.

This is only slightly better than what I used to be doing with all the jewelry I've made recently (in which all of the pieces were sitting on that smaller plate in no particular order). I found the statue at JoAnn's on clearance and thought she went well with my other white accessories.

The necklace-earring sets I've made. There are 6 there, if you care to try and find them.

I finally hung my embroideries up on the wall!

OK, so you didn’t see the before, but the above picture is a huge improvement. Trust me.

Now, breathe deeply, and I’ll show you the organized version of my sewing table.

This is what you call organized?

If you click on the photo, I’ve outlined all the details, but basically those two stacks in the middle there (actually 4 stacks, since they’re two deep) are projects that are either partially started or ones where I’ve managed to match fabric with a pattern (and for the latter, only the matched-up ones that are vaguely summery – I stored the wintery ones in the cabinet). Also, there used to be another box down there underneath, and that’s now gone. And I dusted. And the box in the bottom right-hand corner is stuff to post on Etsy, Craigslist, or toss in the Goodwill pile. You can kind of see the new rug – my office chair doesn’t like it, and especially doesn’t like rolling half on the hardwood floor, half on the rug, so… it might not be staying. I did like having something there, though.

I think I’ll knock out two more shirts (using the above pattern) this weekend, and then I can dig into one of the already-started projects that I found in that box (which may or may not be salvageable – I am a bit bigger than I used to be, especially in the hip area).

In keeping with the spirit of my earlier promise, most of those fabrics up there are very pretty. They’re just not terribly visible.

Finished my homework – the final 4 chapters of the Lemon Tree, as well as the handouts.

Dismantled the deck on Sunday evening (we had to wait for the sun to go down). Submitted request to 811 for them to come mark up our yard so we can begin digging.

You don't really need a whole deck. Whole decks are overrated. You can totally get by with just half a deck. I promise.

Climbed up on the roof on Sunday afternoon to cut tree branches that were hanging too low. The process of getting myself from the roof back onto the ladder took at least 6 months off my life. I may have gained a grey hair. I swear I’m not afraid of heights. Just… falling. We cut up all the branches and they filled two yard waste bags, which isn’t bad. This is only from what we could reach from the roof (there’s more to be trimmed, but we need the A-frame for that, not the new extension ladder).

Repaired the creaking noise our bed made any time someone rolled over or breathed wrong.

Cleaned and organized my sewing room. This included opening the box of “sewing projects” that contained unfinished clothing items of various age (the box hadn’t been opened since we moved, so the newest items could be 14-15 months old). Emptied the box. Several items were placed on the “to do” stack, and several were dismantled for scrap. Some were so bad that they were tossed in their entirety (I made sure to remove my good pins first). The box is now empty – yay! Got a new rug for the floor.

Bought a car on Saturday.

They have their own world domination plan.

Wait… what?

Hello, beauty!

Saturday we went out to shop for Rav4s. Remember last week when I said I knew exactly what I want? Well, Saturday we went off in search – just looking, of course. There was no rush, as the Focus is running fine. The first dealership didn’t have anything in the right color (they only had 6 Rav4s, and the closest to acceptable was Everglade Metallic, which is basically seafoam green, and not what I was looking for). We stopped to refuel, and then continued on to the next dealership. There aren’t really that many Toyota dealers in the Twin Cities area, so we ended up about an hour from our house.

They didn’t really have what I wanted either, since only two had 4WD (the color choices there were red or Super White – seriously, it’s called that). But, the salesman thought he had something else, and went to go see. He drove up in a 2008 (with 4WD, in silver) and we went for a test drive. Just like my other test drives of Rav4s, it was splendid, and just what I wanted.

Do you know how much cargo capacity we now have? It's ridiculous! I'll have to take better pictures to brag about it, because really, it was almost drool-worthy the first time we saw it (especially after compared to the Honda CR-V).

haggled like a mad man (OK, he was actually quite calm, but completely willing to walk away from the fabulous deal we were offered), and it took an hour to convince them to knock the price down. Then another half hour of waiting for the finance people, and we were set to drive home!

That was quite draining. The finance person asked us how long we were planning on keeping the car. I said, “I don’t want to have to go car shopping for a really long time.” And truthfully, I really don’t. That was one of the deciding factors in which year models I was looking at (because while the 2003s are perfectly lovely, and owning a car with 100,000+ miles on it is no big deal to me after all the other ones I’ve driven, it would mean that I would have to go car shopping sooner than, say, a 2006 or 2007). We left the house at 11 and didn’t return until almost 5.

Fleet vehicle. 10,000 miles on it! It's practically new. In fact, it still smells new, and it was sold as a new car (financing-wise).

Complaints about the process aside, I couldn’t be happier. After extending our insurance policy to cover the Rav, we took it on its inaugural trip (excluding the drive home from the dealership)… to Home Depot. Because if we’re going to spend money somewhere, it’s a 50% chance that it’ll be at Home Depot. This is the life of a homeowner. Plus, we wanted to use the storage capacity of the Rav. We bought the extension ladder we’ve needed for a long time and strapped it to the top – that’s what those bars are there for, let’s use them! It was very exciting.

Welcome home!

I don’t know if I’ve ever been so happy about a car. I still don’t know half of the things it does ( found the aux port, hiding in the center arm rest), but I’ve got the book to figure it all out (yes, I plan on reading the book – don’t you? I’ve never owned a car this new – who knows, it might have a “flight” button or “microwave popcorn” feature). Almost everyone who buys a Rav4 loves it, so I have a feeling I’ll be happy with this car for a loooong time.

Incidentally, it has to live outside for a while because 1) I have projects all over my side of the garage, and 2) it doesn’t actually fit in the garage yet. The ramp (from the previous owner) will have to be shaved down. The Rav is only 6 inches wider than the Focus, but I killed the passenger-side mirror on that at least twice.

[Edited to add: oh, we got it for several thousand less than retail. Thank you, Kelley Blue Book, for clarifying just how awesome of a deal we got.]

…

We now return you to your regular blog, in which I don’t talk about cars. I promise pictures of pretty fabric tomorrow.

Being a quilter (I can call myself that, right? I mean, I quilt - not exclusively or extensively, but I do quilt) means that sometimes, you see quilts in the most unlikely places. Do you see them? This is the stair railing at Metro. (Taken with my iPhone.)

I did have some sewing success recently, and this is one example. I think I mentioned this top before (I made two), but this is the other print. A major success - both times I wore the shirt, I got compliments, but no one asked me if I made it. Wow!

I've had to take creative license with these guys, since the color palette of the fabric is a bit limited (red, orange, purple, green), so the water is purple, and I'm sure there will be other strange things that happen (what color am I going to stitch the lighthouse in?). I love their little hats and boots, though. They're getting red hair, btw. It's OK if there are a few more redheads in the world.

Lastly, some pictures I took with my iPhone while drove me home from class last week (we were a one-car family for a week while he had some work done on his car)….

I took a bunch of photos this morning before leaving for work, just for you!

I think I’ll start with pictures of the garden, since that changes every day.

Here's the full view as of this morning. (Please ignore the peeling paint on the side of the house. We know we need to paint. Badly. It's in the works.)

For reference, here’s where we were on June 16th, the last time I photographed it.

The cucumbers are out of control! They're taking over the carrots and lettuce! I need to get these trellissed ASAP (we're doing it Thursday night).

The beans (I think) have little feelers out so they can climb, and buds!

The tomato plant is over a foot tall now! I know it's so much smaller than last year's, since I started from seed instead of a plant, but I'm quite proud of the progress made so far (as if I had anything to do with the growth - I didn't make the water or sun or dirt).

Do you see how big the squash are getting? It's crazy! For perspective, those leaves in the top left corner are from the prolific daylilies we have.

The squash want to climb, too!

Prince Charming's Lambs Ear is so happy, it's flowering! (And a bit overgrown, but we'll forgive it.)

Prince Charming gave me a hummingbird feeder for my birthday, and we hung it up over the weekend. Isn't it pretty? Now to get the hummingbirds to notice it... (I have a book. I just have to find the time to read it.)

I took some other seemingly random photos of the garden, but they really did have a purpose. You see, we literally had a 7′ tall, 1″ diameter tree growing out of one of the lilac bushes. I had cut it down to the ground last year, probably around this time, so it grew 7 feet in 12 months! Crazy! asked me to send him a leaf so he could identify it, so I dug around in the yard waste bin this morning before work (it’s trash pick-up day) and found one. Then I took some pictures of the tree we have that’s growing out of the fence (also cut down last year, also not giving up on life) so he could help out with that one. This is what happens when you don’t weed often enough (I blame the former owner and the year the house was vacant).

There’s still significant pruning and weeding to be done before I can show off our yard this year, but we’ve made major progress.

Don’t worry, I saved some pics for tomorrow.

I’ve been perusing Craigslist for the several months. In my head, I have a list of things I’m interested in. While I’ve only found one thing so far that I absolutely had to have (some day I’ll get to work on that project and you’ll get pictures), I have learned an awful lot from scrolling through the site.

I have very strong feelings about tables. They are not allowed to be round or oval; 90* angles only please (in my house, that is – you can decorate however you want to). Absolutely no glass tops whatsoever. This goes for anything that might be a table. Coffee table, end table, dining table, night stand… you get the point. I despise glass tops. [Editor's note: that would be glass-only tops. Occasionally, a glass protective top covering a wood top is acceptable.]

People have absolutely no idea what it is they own. They use phrases that they think will get the most people looking at it, like Ikea or vintage or Victorian, or midcentury modern. They don’t know what those terms mean, and they very rarely apply to the item being sold.

Along with that, people have no idea how to sell or even price their items. Pictures are a must. Not “pictures will be posted later today,” not “email me for pictures or more information.” Just include every single possible detail that a buyer might want. This would save so much headache (and we all know that Craigslist experiences can be headaches).

People are stupid. I know this sounds harsh, but it’s true. In the “antiques” section, a good 50% of the post titles start with the word antique. Um… duh. Please be more descriptive. Also, “I must be crazy” or “miscellaneous household goods” are not at all interesting to me. Additionally, the following two words should never go together: vintage Ikea. Enough said.

However, the word unique or strange will attract me. It’s like a car crash. You know that it’s going to be bad, but you just can’t drag yourself away.

Cute means nothing. Absolutely nothing. Neither does retro, really. People just throw those about willy-nilly.

I have to really, really, really like/want/need something to drive more than 10 minutes to buy it. It has to be absolutely perfect, and a bargain too. There are plenty of cities in the metro area that I would have to look up on a map to find out where they are – it’s unlikely that I’ll buy something from Craigslist if I’ve never been to that particular suburb before. Likewise, unless it is a piece of furniture that will complete my life and allow me to die absolutely fulfilled (it’s hard to imagine a piece of furniture providing that kind of satisfaction), I will not be driving to northeast Minneapolis to get it. I did that once, and let me just say, I hate driving in northeast.

There are lots of really desperate people out there. This is what I have to conclude when I see someone selling a used vase for $3. There are tons of things on Craigslist that I would never go to the hassle of posting and trying to sell; maybe I’d do a curb alert: free!, but more likely it would go into the Goodwill donations pile. I suppose other people might put those on a garage sale pile they have in the garage, but we don’t have one of those.

I use Bloglines for my Craigslist RSS feeds, and I hate it. But, since it’s much more annoying to put those (and the Flickr groups I subscribe to) in with the rest of my feeds in Google Reader, I use it. For some reason, Bloglines has this “limit” of 200 posts for any one feed (and if you subscribe to a Craigslist feed like “furniture by owner” and don’t check it over the weekend, you will have exceeded several times over), which means that once you hit that max, it doesn’t grab anything else from that feed, so you effectively lose out. I’m really glad I don’t watch any blogs that way (though I can’t think of any blogs that would have 200 posts in a weekend).

I’m sure this was a totally random post, and perhaps a bit disjointed. It was written over the course of several months, however, which surely explains it all. I’m trying to clear out my drafts, and you’ll understand why at the end of this week (or maybe early next week).

I can think of lots of ideal ways to spend the hours from 5-10 tonight:

Laying in my hammock, reading a book, glass of wine on hand

Completing the summer dress I started on Sunday

Working on my embroidered pieces for DQS9

Eating a King Size Kit Kat bar, piece by piece (OK, probably wouldn’t take 5 hours, but I could definitely stretch it out for a while)

Finishing up the weeding / thinning out the lettuce in my garden and building trellises for the climbing veggies

Anything involving ice cream

And those are just the realistic ones, the things I have easy access to. I didn’t even mention beaches and oceans or foreign cities or fancy restaurants.

Ooh, a fireworks display from the riverfront seating of a cafe in Paris! OK, now I must be hallucinating.

Instead, I will be sitting at my computer, headphones on (thank you, White Noise App!), writing a paper.

Boo.

On the bright side, I think it’s going to be about 90* with 90%+ humidity, so I suppose laying in the hammock or gardening wouldn’t really be enjoyable.

Ooh, ahh, oh!

It’s only kind of my own fault that I waited so long to get this paper done (it’s due tomorrow at 6). OK, entirely my fault. We’ve had two weeks, and it’s an easy paper. I just haven’t been interested in doing it, or, rather, there’ve been so many other things I’ve been more interested in.

It was so humid on Sunday that my cotton candy "melted" while I was eating it. Gross thought, but not so gross that I couldn't eat all of it. Yes, all of it. All for me.

I know it was a long weekend, and you’d think I would have had the time to write a simple 5 page paper. But, you see, Saturday I went to JoAnn (to buy fabric and a pattern for the afore-mentioned dress), which always takes longer than I think it will. And we went to the mall to buy clothes, because there were serious gaps in my wardrobe. Later that evening I cut out the new dress. And we spent some time on Sunday doing yard work and cleaning the house, and I worked on re-reading the book for the paper (see, I did do homework!). I had a wicked headache, and worked on my new dress while waiting for the Advil to kick in. came over after dinner and we went to watch the fireworks.

Pretty!

And Monday, well, what can I say. I finished re-reading the book. Then we went over to ‘s for the rest of the day. I was hoping to get home by 8 or 8:30, so I could re-read the articles, but that didn’t happen. So, is going to make dinner tonight so that I can maximize the time I have, and will hopefully be done before 10. I get grumpy when I don’t get my sleep.

This one makes me think of sci-fi. Aliens perhaps?

I totally have things I need to take pictures of to share with you, but don’t hold your breath. My spare time will be consumed by class for the next two days, and Friday is the earliest I could conceivably have something to share photo-wise. You’ll have to live with these pictures of the fireworks that I took with my iPhone. Yes, with my phone! I have many more, but it’s taking way too long to upload them on 3G, so it’ll have to wait until I connect my phone up to the computer.

Hope your weekend was as lovely (and homework-free) as mine!

Edited to add: There’s a video of the fireworks finale posted on YouTube! I’ve only watched it without sound, but it looks really good!

Admittedly, Friday night was a late one (and we were the first to leave the party! several people showed up as we were leaving), complete with multiple glasses of wine and champagne, and a fabulous dessert that took 12 hours to make. The wine was able to win a small victory over the large quantity of espresso powder in the dessert, and I slept in quite late on Saturday. I may have pulled myself out of bed by 10; I ate some breakfast, went downstairs, and within half an hour was back upstairs sleeping. I know, I know. Shameful.

Later that day, decided it was important that I know that while it may seem like my life is difficult, clearly his is more so.

An unmade bed is the comfiest, you know.

I tried to do some yard work, but I didn’t get very far. It was much too hot outside. I also slept in on Sunday. After doing some yard work (cleaning up all the branches dropped in the storms, pruning some bushes back too much, dead-heading the daylilies), I took a nap. Again, the cats felt the need to show me up.

Matea prefers the Poang in the bedroom,

while Korben again chooses an unmade bed (actually, it's partially made, in an attempt to curtail this behavior - clearly it didn't work).

I made progress on our bedroom curtains, though not enough to show you.

Instead, you get this cute picture of a chipmunk that Prince Charming took.

I also did some homework, played some piano, and didn’t vacuum like I should have. Oh well. I was seriously tired the entire weekend. And this morning was no better. Perhaps I should have stayed home – I really wasn’t worth that much here at work. I think it might be related to my allergies – is that possible? It’s either that or I’m dying. Whatever it is that I’m allergic to in the outside world (not my skin allergies, the other ones) is floating around in abundance right now. My phone app said the allergen index yesterday was 2.2 (on a 12 scale), but, as pointed out, that’s just a composite. It felt like at least 11 to me – I even started to get that itching inside my ears. No fun.

So, I didn't spend any time actually in my hammock over the weekend, but here it is all set up! We hung up my new hummingbird feeder just around the corner, on a low-hanging branch, so maybe I'll get to share some pictures of new visitors.

I did have a lovely extended birthday celebration, all the way into Sunday (we forgot to go get ice cream on Saturday, so we went to Coldstone on Sunday!). We had some major storms here over the weekend (including the one on Friday night that made a ton of people late for the party), so not only did I not get the rest of the weeding done, our yard is full of mushrooms. I should be happy that the plants are all thriving in all this water, though, right? The squash, cucumbers, lettuce, and peas are all doing quite well. The carrots are slow-growing, and the tomato plants are making progress (I did finally cull out one of the plants that was overcrowding the really healthy looking one). It’s almost time to start trellising some of the vinier ones.

I seem to be finally waking up – perhaps lunch will help. I’m kinda wishing I could re-introduce caffeine into my system (on a regular basis, Friday night’s dessert notwithstanding). Instead, I’ll just remind myself how much I enjoy not itching and not wearing elbow braces frequently. And maybe I’ll take myself for a walk.

I am very tired today – I took multiple naps over the weekend, so I’m not really sure what’s going on. At any rate, I’ll leave it up to other people to provide today’s entertainment.

Birthday cards flooded our mailbox last week, several with very humorous sentiments written inside. This first one was in a card from Grandma:

Thanks again for helping Alison with the brunch. You are quite a baker. Go Girl Go! You are so thin (do you eat your baked stuff?).

Next up, this one from one of my aunts, also reflecting on the family brunch:

It was also quite clear that Grant and Joey see the two of you as their fav aunt and uncle!

I wasn’t the only one to get funny mail. got a thank you and passed this on to me:

Grandma’s comment – “I didn’t know Kelly could bake.”

Can’t beat family, can you? Love it.

There’s too much hate in this world. Just sayin’. I am not exempt to this. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just take it down a notch?

Also, I finally remembered to Google “what’s wrong with my oak tree?” and actually found the answer! We actually have a fungi infections, but it is not damaging or treatable (at least not by the homeowner). They just make the tree look less pretty. (If you’re curious, we have Oak leaf blister. The important thing is that we don’t have Oak Wilt, which is bad, bad, bad.) The second weird thing with our tree? Apparently it’s flowering. That’s what that brown, mossy, falling in clumps stuff is. Weird. Not exactly the stuff bouquets are made out of.

Apparently getting little sleep makes me sensitive to sound. One might say “irritable.” Maybe that’s a “duh” statement, but I swear for the first half of the day every noise someone made brought me this much closer to snapping. Again, the White Noise app saved the day.

Last night, I was quite sure that I had lost the 4GB memory card for our camera. I thought I’d brought it to work, but tore apart my purse twice and couldn’t find it. Then I looked around the house, I retraced my steps this morning… nothing. Plus, we couldn’t find the 1GB card either. So, no picture-taking.

And then, this morning, while going through my purse for a third time, there it was. I swear someone was playing a joke on me, because I’d looked in that same spot at least half a dozen times. I’m quite glad that the dorky pictures I took of myself to commemorate my birthday aren’t roaming around there for someone else to mock. No, I will not share. You got enough dorky pictures yesterday.
