Some things I’ve bookmarked recently:
- Eggnog Fudge | recipegirl.com -I plan on making this… soon. I even bought fresh nutmeg. But I don’t have eggnog, or marshmallow fluff… so I guess this will have to wait until I can go to the store.
- Mudslide Cupcakes Recipe | Endless Simmer – Jameson + chocolate cupcakes? Worth a shot (there’s always Jameson in the house, not for myself – not a whiskey fan – but for the boy).
- Creamy Hot Chocolate Muffins | A Whisk and A Prayer – Hot chocolate + muffins? Yes, definitely a genius idea.
- Healthier hot chocolate | Nutrition Data – Well, I suppose if I’m going to consumer that much hot cocoa, maybe I should aim for healthier. But Swiss Miss just tastes so good, and it’s so easy…..
- Egg Nog French Toast | recipegirl.com – Now, I am not a French toast fan, but I do love eggnog, so I’m willing to try this out. You know, for the sake of experimenting.
- Single Serving Pie in a Jar | Our Best Bites – When is pie ever a bad idea? (
, don’t answer that. You are the only person who does not like pie crust.)
I’ve got a few other recipes in the cue (personally, not blog-wise), but they’re all from apps on my phone, and so I can’t exactly link you to recipes at the moment. But, for your thoughts… pumpkin tiramisu, chocolate orange fudge, double layer pumpkin pie, pumpkin ginger rice pudding, spiced pumpkin bread, and vanilla bean rice pudding.
And, because they’ve been raved about, the recipes for the two types of fudge I made this weekend: Orange Cream and Almond Joy. You should make them up, bring them in to work, and let the praise just roll in.

I started these last year, and would love to make progress (there are 6 more, I believe).
*Someone* in my house is getting sick, and it’s not the someone who got her flu shot this year. OK, that was a cheap shot. It’s probably just a cold that is coming down with, and I was felled by one of those in early October. But, two facts remain: has not gotten his flu shot [again] this year, despite my nagging, and is sick. Correlation does not equal causation, so I’ll just leave it at that.
Already divided up into color groups and ready to be cut up to make potholders and coasters.
He predicts that he will be fully sick by Wednesday or Thursday, just in time for serious work to start on the family room. Right now, we’re playing the lovely waiting game of patching up concrete. The walls need to be cleaned before we can paint, but mostly the concrete needs to be patched.
It's a panel. So easy... just find some backing fabric, do some rudimentary quilting, bind, and hang. (12 days of Christmas by Moda)
[You can see the whole panel here.]
So, I can’t help but wonder if this sickness might end up benefiting me. Tonight is my last class, and my paper is due Thursday at 9 pm, and then the semester will be done. I have… two and a half Christmas-y sewing projects that I’d really like to start. Last night I settled for cleaning my office (while waiting out restless legs, which are totally not conducive to reading research articles), but I’m itching to cut into some fabric. Alas, crafty things take a back seat to major home renovation projects, so while I have some time off before the next semester, I am not sure how much I’ll end up getting done.
I don't even know what to do with these guys but they're so cute it hurts! I want to figure out how best to use this piece, since it's out of print. Table runner? Apron? Pillow?
That said, if, perhaps, is sick all weekend and doesn’t want to work on the family room (and who would blame him?), that would mean that I get to sew all weekend. Really, I don’t want him to be sick, especially not all weekend. But I would like the chance to sew….
Fat quarters... my mind is churning away on how to best use these too.
For now, we’ll continue pumping him full of Vitamin C and cough drops, and let his immune system fight it out. More likely than not, even if he is sick over the weekend he’ll want to work on the family room, so I probably shouldn’t get my hopes up.
Lest you think I'm unprepared in case I get some spare time (if the rest of this post hasn't already convinced you, I'm not sure this will help)... here's the rest of my Christmas fabric stash. There's even some flannel in there, and some stuff I bought a decade ago before I had... taste.
[Editor's note: No, I don't want anyone to actually fall ill. I would be perfectly happy if everyone stayed healthy and I had to work on the basement all weekend long. I just... was able to find the silver lining in this poorly timed sickness, that's all.]
I don’t have any pictures of family or food to show you. Why? Because we didn’t take any.
Well, then, what did I take pictures of? And how did we spend our long weekend?
This is how the family room looked last Wednesday.
Friday (after some shopping, of course) we pulled out the crow bar and other tools and took out the last built-in, pulled out all the trim, and removed the wood paneling from one wall (we stopped before tackling the back wall).
We got up really early on Saturday (OK, 8 am, but it seemed really early) and pulled the rest of the wood paneling down.
Then we loaded everything up into the Rav and took it to the dump, and then went over to Mom's to visit the boys.
Prince Charming's dad came over on Sunday and they did the rest of the demolition.
We're down to the bare walls now.
Oh, and there are no lights anymore. I took this at 8:30 am with the lamp on, and the flash, and it's still pretty dark down there.
Looks like we have another trip to the dump....
ERIC is working on patching some holes in the concrete block (the outlets were recessed into the walls by knocking holes into the concrete – not the right way to do that). This week we’ll vacuum and wash the walls (well, we’ll at least bleach the two small mold spots) and then paint them (Kilz oil-based).
We drove over to Menards on Sunday night and bought a pocket door frame kit. No door, just the frame. It actually looks like it will be pretty easy to install, and will be a major improvement. Glad I thought of it! I did pick out a door at Menards, but we didn’t know the dimensions of our opening. We’ll go over to BMO and see if they have one that is similar to it.
 Paneled Arch from Mastercraft
It should match the styling of the built-ins, assuming we can master creating that arch.
We also looked at recessed lighting, just to get an idea of the options. They’re boring, but they’ll work. Light!
I also made progress on my paper (the last assignment for the semester), but don’t have any photos of that. Wait, no, that’s not true. Enjoy!
She was helping me with my homework. It made her so very happy!
Another basement update…
Huh. It's starting to look really empty. Where'd the TV go? And the curtains?
You can see I didn't bother to clean up for you.
Well, at least it wasn't stolen (the TV, that is). Prince Charming got everything hooked back up on Monday night (everything, that is, except for volume control for broadcast television... details, details).
And this is what our living room has been reduced to. You can see the cats made the adjustment rather quickly.
Tonight, the rest of the “stuff” in the basement is getting taken care of. Most of it will be removed, and a small bit will remain in a pile in the middle of the room, which we’ll cover with a large tarp. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?
It’s a good thing I didn’t volunteer up our house for any holiday celebrations. It’s all sorts of crazy over here.
So, long before I have time to make a quilt for our bedroom, I need to make a quilt for a certain little boy ( ).
His mother and I have talked about patterns a few times, and here’s what it’s narrowed down to (Flickr Gallery). Leave your comments in Flickr or here.
I have started to pull out the fabrics from my stash that I’ve purchased with this quilt in mind (or at least with a little boy in mind).
We could just call this... "what little boys are made of."
Perhaps that picture isn’t very helpful for you. How about a collage?
Pictures marked with a snowflake were in Grant's quilt. Does anything stand out as not belonging? What am I missing? If you visit the gallery (linked above), there's a link to the individual fabric swatches if that is easier for you.
And… some ones I’m not sure about can be seen here.
And... the little boy in question (on the right).
(The other one is already kept sufficiently warm and wrapped up.)
So, what are your opinions? Design? Fabric choices? Encouraging words that I’ll get this done in time even though I’m starting [at least] three months later than I did with ? I would love to start cutting out fabric soon – Christmas break will do fine for that, I think. So, you have a week to weigh in. And… go!
I forgot to take pictures until Sunday night, so this is all you get. Also, I had problems with the shoulder straps, so I can’t even hang it up for you. I’ll figure it out, though. I think I decided to try using commercially-made straps.
That lace... very hard. Will definitely rethink using a pattern with so much lace next time.
I decided later that I need to take out the side seams and make them much skinnier, or at least as skinny as possible. I’ll overcast them while I’m at it, so that will effectively finish them off. The extra inch around my hips will be a good thing. I’ll post a picture when it’s completed (of it hanging on a hanger – I don’t plan on modeling this for the whole internet).
Right now, it hangs a few inches below my knees. It’s supposed to have a side slit (and lace at the hem, but I ran out after having to make that left bust three times), which I’ve nixed. Instead, I think I’ll hem it several inches above my knees, so that I can wear it under a dress instead of just as a nightie. Maybe I can scrounge up enough lace to hem it with; the other option is to use my narrow hem foot, and I’m not sure how that would work with the charmeuse. Worth a try, though.
I have plenty of this print left for a half slip (pattern I used for this slip), or maybe some shorts. Of course, I have several other prints of this charmeuse too, so I could just move on and save the leftover for later.
I have learned a lot by doing this project. The charmeuse was not hard to work with – just required more pinning than cotton. Also, this particular style bust is not very flattering on me, so I’ll have to work harder next time on picking out an appropriate pattern (I have three or four other vintage lingerie patterns to choose from – one of them is bound to be right for my figure). Lastly, I need to learn a better way to apply lace. I did not follow the pattern instructions because they made no sense to me. But my way wasn’t exactly perfect either. There must be a good way.
On Friday, I listed off a bunch of plans for the weekend. I thought I should post an update of how that all went.
- Remove the books from the bookshelves in the family room, in preparation for demo’ing it. Check. Took half an hour on Friday evening.
- Make progress on my 17 page paper. Other homework: work on portfolio, do assessment analysis, complete standards matrix. I’d like to not spend all of Thanksgiving weekend doing homework. Completed the standards matrix and glossary and posted both on my portfolio. Didn’t attempt the assessment analysis or the paper.
- Get the left side bust of the slip sewn (and potentially more, but I don’t want to be too ambitious). Sewed up left bust, then attached bust to front. Attached lace to back, then stitched up sides. Left: shoulder straps and hem.
- Go to Sherwin Williams to look at that paint (and maybe at their decorative finishes, which are not easy to see on their website). Negatory. Decided it would only take 5 minutes after work to grab the paint chip, so it got postponed.
- Bake a test pumpkin pie (with homemade pumpkin). I’m hoping to bring one to Thanksgiving dinner (but have not had confirmation on exactly what it is we’re supposed to bring), and I think testing that out would be a good idea, having only made pumpkin pie with canned pumpkin before. Also no progress here. I did pick out several pumpkin pie / bread recipes and some fudge recipes for Thanksgiving, and supplies needed to make these have been purchased. That’s something, right?
- Vacuum, clean the bathroom, other boring house tasks. Um, yeah. For yet another week, I have completely neglected cleaning my house, unless you count vacuuming in the basement after demo’ing it.
- Take pictures to share here. Really this is only half done. I took some of the pictures I meant to, and then forgot to take the rest.
- Take pictures of some more stuff to put on Craigslist. Done. Two bookshelves / DVD shelves sold, and the bench / shelf in the living room sold. Just the little table is still hanging around.
- Sleep. I’m always quite successful at this (though I did have problems getting to sleep and/or staying asleep, so perhaps I wasn’t all that successful. But I did sleep in both days.
- Go back to the place that installed the remote unlock on my car and have them disconnect the horn – I am really annoyed with that “feature.” Yeah, totally bailed on doing this. Just didn’t want to deal with it. Another day.
- Install the cover on the air conditioner (I think enough snow has melted that we can walk out there and do this). The cover for the grill arrived yesterday, a month before the estimated delivery date, and so we are now… 95% winterized. Just that hole by the deck that needs to be filled or partially filled, and the sides need to be boarded off from pesky raccoons. Air conditioner is sufficiently protected from winter. The deck is still in need of some love. So that gets us up to… 97% winterized. Yay us!
This next week is going to be rather fluid. I have a master list (in my head) of what needs to get done (and what I’d like to accomplish), but I think it’s all going to be played by ear. Tomorrow I’ll be doing my observation hours at the high school (instead of working), and I have class at night. I’m hoping to bake some tonight and Wednesday night, but we’ll see. Then there’s Thanksgiving, and all that homework, and hopefully a trip to visit and the boys (head’s up: I need some assistance with a wrap dress that I cannot seem to make sense of). I hope to avoid Black Friday shopping like the plague, and think that it might be time to switch out my “fall sewing projects” for my “winter sewing projects.” What do you think?
So this isn’t much of an update, but I realized that I hadn’t shared the small bits of progress we’d made.
Two new desks, both purchased on CL. They're HUGE and very sturdy.
His new chair (for guests), also from CL. Prince Charming took it apart and reglued it, applied a fresh coat of poly (or 12, on the arms), and then we recovered the seat.
Here's the very manly fabric we special ordered ("fabric" is not exactly correct, since it's poly / vinyl). I love it (and I'm not really into black).
Also, while this isn’t really an office update, this closet is attached to ‘s office, so I thought I’d share. Before last week, this closet was stuffed full of crap, and the filing cabinets were empty.
Oh my, the floor is clear! Just one box left to file, hiding in the corner out of your view.
So, you can see, we’ve been busy! Kind of makes you tired just thinking about it.
[Warning: This post does not end with a pretty picture, mostly because there is no pretty picture. Quite frankly, none of the pictures are pretty. This is an in-progress update, not a project complete update.]
Thursday night, this is basically what the "library" in the family room looked like.
Friday night we removed all those books. Wow, is this an improvement? It's so hard to tell.
100 Bonus Points to anyone who can tell me where in our house we moved all our books.
After some demolition, we filled up the Rav and took this all to the dump.
So, what do you have left, after library {minus} books {minus} car filled with plywood {plus} some quality time spent with the vacuum cleaner?
This is what is left. I'm not sure how to mathematically represent it.
I don’t know if you can tell, but we took the door off of the room too. The track for the doors (that I pulled out of there a long time ago – you can see a picture of them here) was pulled down and the framework, and the shelves themselves. Thankfully, it looks like we only have two smallish spots of mold, and after a topical application of bleach and a coat of Kilz, I think we should be good to go.
[Editor's note: We started ripping stuff out at about 1 pm on Saturday, and were back home from the dump by 5. Hence the "4 hours" reference.]
Oh, but we didn’t stop there.
This is what the other side of the room used to look like.
We got rid of some more stuff via Craigslist on Sunday.
PS - Ikea furniture is super easy to get rid of on CL. We got $20 for each, which I'm happy about.
All of the DVDs have moved upstairs and into the bookshelves (which aren't finished, but that's just going to have to wait a while).
We also had this shelving / bench thing that we got with the house, and it’s been slated to leave the house, so I posted it too while I was on CL.
Don't worry, the space won't be empty for long. (Add another $20 to our wallets.)
It took us a while, but we finally got that cord there to do what it was supposed to do (which is snake through the vent and down to the basement ) so that we can hook the TV up when we’re ready to bring that stuff upstairs. This will be our temporary TV space while we work on the basement.
I also have a small table listed on CL that has not been asked about yet (well, one email that seemed suspicious, so I’m not replying to it). Fortunately, it’s quite small, and I actually like it a lot, so it can stay for a while.
I hope you like home improvement pictures and dark boring basement pictures, because there will be quite a few of those over the next month or so. Just thought I’d prepare you.
- Why does Friday afternoon always seem so long.
- What affects your daily happiness? How you see the world.
- Thank you for ~for letting me be myself again~. Or, rather, falletinme be mice elf agin. Thanks, Sly and the Family Stone!
- Christmas is my favorite holiday because it makes me fell all warm and fuzzy.
- I am SO close to being done with the semester.
- We can be whoever (or whatever) we make up our minds to be.
- And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to not caring so much when I stay up late reading (because tomorrow’s not a work day), tomorrow my plans include homework and Sunday, I want to use my sewing machine! For more details, see my earlier post.
via Friday Fill-Ins
That’s what went down last night. We went over the pre-referral process, which was only quasi-useful (mostly because I assume, perhaps erroneously, that every district does it slightly differently and I’ll have to be initiated on the system in place when I finally get a job). After the break we went over “tips for getting and keeping a job.” I’m sure the undergrads found it useful, as most of them are about 20 years old and still living at home with their parents, and have probably never interviewed for a professional job. For those of us who have, however, there was nothing new. Dress, act, and speak professionally. Be punctual. Don’t make waves until you get tenure. Etc.
However, I’m now at the very end of that class. “Just” the paper, portfolio, glossary of terms, and standards matrix. Oh, and those volunteer hours (but I think I’ve got that all set up for next Tuesday).
There’s even less for my Tuesday class, now that our Assessment Plans are done and I finished my final exam (a week before it was due – oops!). Just the assessment analysis left, and taking the final exam (which shouldn’t be a big deal, since we’re all writing one, based on the exact same things – I’m guessing they will all be very similar).
So, I got home before 8:30 last night, which was awesome. has started taking a kick-boxing class (or something similar, involving gloves and it’s at a martial arts studio, and beyond that my eyes kind of glaze over), so he was gone and I had the house to myself. You’re not going to believe what I did with my free time.
I turned on my sewing machine.
I know!
I finally got the lace sewn onto the right bust piece of the slip I’ve been trying to make. Things did not go so well with the left side, and I ended up cutting out a second piece, which also went horribly. We’ll try again (with a third piece) tonight. Should I mention that this part is all step 1 of the instructions? I’m pretty sure that after this, it’s easy. (Gather bust, sew to main body of slip, sew up side seams, hem with lace.) My lace attaching skills leave something to be desired, but it looks pretty good regardless. No pictures, only because it’s dark out all the time now (all the time that I’m not at work, that is). We’ve reached that time of year when I need to remember to take lots of pictures over the weekend and then carefully mete them out over the course of the week. I’ll try to get back into the habit.
I also finished season5 of Star Trek: DS9. Thrilling, I know. Then I went back to watching Eureka, which is a fun little sci-fi show (set it modern-day America) available on Netflix Watch Instantly.
Unintentionally, I found a paint color for the basement that both of us could agree on. I wasn’t looking – I’d passed that torch since every color I came up with garnered a “meh” response. But, while catching up on some blogs, I saw a post on Remodelaholic, which was a repost from House of Turquoise, (which I think is a repost from Studio10, or maybe iet’s Decor Chick – I’m getting a bit confused) is listed towards the end of this post on favorite blue paint colors, and was used by M.O.D. in a kitchen. Whew! At any rate, between those posts there are enough photos to get an idea of how the color looks in different lights and rooms. It should look really nice with white trim and the white built-ins (OK, the cream carpet will look dingy for a few years, but that’s just going to have to be OK). Oh, if you didn’t want to click through to all the links, here it is:
 Rainwashed from Sherwin Williams
However, you get a much better idea of the color from those blog posts – it’s not nearly as grey as that little sample appears. Of course, now we have to go to the store and see the color swatch in person, because 1) it’s prudent, and 2) there’s no way I want to use it if it’s actually that grey. We are not having a grey basement. (I might go for grey carpeting… I rather like that idea. But not grey walls.)
So… progress!
This weekend, plans are to …
- Remove the books from the bookshelves in the family room, in preparation for demo’ing it.
- Make progress on my 17 page paper. Other homework: work on portfolio, do assessment analysis, complete standards matrix. I’d like to not spend all of Thanksgiving weekend doing homework.
- Get the left side bust of the slip sewn (and potentially more, but I don’t want to be too ambitious).
- Go to Sherwin Williams to look at that paint (and maybe at their decorative finishes, which are not easy to see on their website).
- Vacuum, clean the bathroom, other boring house tasks.
- Take pictures to share here.
- Take pictures of some more stuff to put on Craigslist.
- Sleep.
- Go back to the place that installed the remote unlock on my car and have them disconnect the horn – I am really annoyed with that “feature.”
That’s not really all that much, all things considered. Several of those are 5 minute tasks. Maybe I’ll be able to update you on Monday with a mostly crossed-off list. Hey, a girl can dream!
We’re busy exchanging emails with Christmas gift ideas at the moment, which required me to come up with some things that I wanted. Arguably, my list of “things I want” is quite long, but most of it is stuff that I would buy myself – things that don’t make for good gifts (anyone want to buy me enough fabric to make the backing of our quilt? I thought not). However, after perusing my Amazon wish list and Etsy favorites, I came up with a small but appropriate list.
All the while, though, I kept coming up with things that I really wanted that no one was ever going to get me. No, seriously. It’s not because y’all aren’t lovely and generous, but more because, well, they’re impossible gifts.
I’ve written them down for your entertainment:
- Time. Available in many increments.
- Time to craft for myself. I’d love to run out of fabric. Wouldn’t that be awesome?
- Time to create gifts for others (a certain little boy’s quilt, for instance).
- Time to make a quilt for our bedroom.
- Time to totally chill and not feel guilty that I should be doing homework.
- A permanently clean house. (No, I’m not asking you to get rid of my cats for me, even if they are the main source of dirty floors in our home.) I’d love to never again have to vacuum or wash a floor.
- A snowy winter that averages around 50* every day.
- A teleporter so I could visit friends and family, no matter how far away, any time I want (without having to take time off of work and drive through Wisconsin).
- To magically know everything I need to know to be a good, quality teacher, and then get a job (without having to go through 18 more months of school.)
- A paint color for the basement that is somehow yellow without being too yellow (but not looking puke-y either).
- 12 pounds to disappear from my midsection.
- For the basement remodeling to go smoothly without any hiccups or problems whatsoever, and to finish it on time. Ha!
- For my grandpa to reach his goal of living to 100 – not for me, but for him, because if he wants it, that’s totally awesome.
- A calorie-free version of Caramel Nut Clusters.
- Grey dress shoes (that are comfortable and have a heel). I’m beginning to think they don’t exist.
- Someone to come and take care of my pile of things that should go up on ebay or Etsy (this includes taking care of shipping out said items when they sell).
- An unlimited spending gift card for Ann Taylor. I’ve recently fallen in love (via ebay, not the actual store – I do not enjoy paying those retail prices).
- Those gorgeous $300 frames to show up with my prescription in them. (While technically attainable, I don’t know anyone who gives gifts this expensive. Plus, we went back to look for them on Monday night, just to get the brand name so I could e-stalk them, and they were gone!)
- To not be asked when I’m having babies for the entire 2011 year.
- A Brazillian Blowout (again with the possible but really expensive ideas!).
- Several cruises or tropical vacations (where I miraculously don’t get sunburnt).
As it so happens, I also have a list of things no one needs to get me (because life is that good):
- Great friends and family.
- Happy memories.
- A loving husband.
- A home of our own.
- Cats that drive us crazy yet are so adorable as to prevent us from kicking them to the curb.
- A job (I may not like it all the time, but I have one, and I know that I should be thankful for that).
- Cute and hilarious nephews (though if you want to find a way to give me more time to spend with them, more power to you).
- Education.
- Books and music (I am surrounded).
What’s on your list this year? (Either list – unrealistic or “don’t need because I’m blessed.”)
Wholly untrue, by the way. I just really happen to like that first snow when it’s all picturesque and clean.
More birds in the tree out back, patiently waiting for me to stop moving so they can eat at the feeder.
 ...
We have a few reminders that fall is still here, officially.
I'm quite pleased with how this one turned out. Who knew an upside-down chair would make such a great prop?
We had quite a bit of snow over the weekend. Officially, 8 inches at the airport (which is 5 minutes away), which melted down to 4 by Monday morning. More melted away, but I hear it’s snowing again this morning.
Big chunks of snow caked up on any available surface, however unlikely.
The Rav is currently having keyless entry installed – we dropped it off last night, and I was just notified that it’s ready. That was fast! It will be so nice to have that done! (Tiny little design flaw with the Rav, which I’m sure is supposed to be a feature, or was just based on the assumption that everyone would have keyless entry – there’s only one door at which you can use the key; even the back door doesn’t have a lock!) Just in time for many trips to Home Depot….
You have to sit really, really still in order to get a picture of these little guys. They can be so skittish!
After that we went over to the mall to pick up my new glasses. I love them! And… I don’t have any pictures. Sorry. We were in a rush this morning with the car juggling. They are fab.
First victim - the Honey Locust.
We walked around the mall a little bit, and stopped in at Famous Footwear, where I finally found the brown boots I’ve been looking for! And for less than $50! It was a banner day for me.
How did this snow get so yellowed without touching the ground?
I didn’t want to test my good karma by looking for grey heels, so we went home (having been at the MOA last week and another mall over the weekend, there really wasn’t much more we could do).
A welcoming scene at our front door
was so kind as to proof my two homework assignments, so I’m good to go for this week (for things that need to be turned in, at least).
Tonight we’ll pick up the Rav and then I’ll go to class, so there won’t be anything entertaining to share tomorrow. But, I have more snow pictures lined up for you. See how I planned ahead there?
It’s not fun. It might be less fun than taking a test, especially if you’re writing a test for a grade.
For my assessment class, one of our last assignments is to create a final exam for our class. On the last day, we will each get one of our classmates’ exams to take. Our grade will be based mostly on the exam we create, and partly on our answers on the one we take (our teacher suggested 60-40, though it seems to be a bit fluid). The worst part? We have to include an answer key for our own exam, which means basically we have to take that test too. That’s the part I’m on right now, and it is no fun.
My assessment plan is due tomorrow, and it’s… 80% completed. Maybe 85%. I just have some descriptions of formative assessments to write, a 1-2 paragraph overview of the unit, and some polishing. Maybe 75%. I still need to acquire an assessment sample to analyze. I think that’s it for that class.
For my exceptional learners class, I have a research paper (that I’ve done the research for, technically, in that I’ve found the articles I needed and printed them off, and some of them have been read) and a portfolio. And some volunteer hours.
I am getting anxious for the end of the semester. As much as I have enjoyed my classes this fall (and I have, for a change), I want my life back. I keep reading blogs and seeing all the cool things people do with their spare time, pretty quilts and clothing and knitting and embroidery … I would like to do some of that too, please. I’d be happy with just a little bit. Sadly, I think my course load is heavier next semester (including a methods course that involves lots of classroom hours). (Silver lining: I get the summer off! Yay!)
So, this weekend was spent doing homework, obviously. Our power did go out briefly on Saturday afternoon. I was afraid I was going to have to leave the house and go to a coffee shop just so I could get my homework done (my laptop will only live for so long without power). Thankfully, it was only out for 20 minutes. We lost a major branch on on our locust tree and will have to call the neighbor to fix it. (He does tree maintenance for a job, and just put a sign out in front of their house with a phone number to call. That should be a fun call. “Hi, we need a branch removed from a tree, can you do that? Excellent. Just look out of your house towards the grey house next door – see that big branch? Yeah, that’s the one.” OK, that was a lot funnier in my head.)
There was bowling on Sunday night, which was fun. It was the first time I’d gone bowling when it wasn’t part of a youth group (or college) event. It wasn’t all that different, truth be told. I did score 396 over 4 games, so I feel really good about that. (96, 99, 96, 105). , , and the latter’s boy all had fun. , by the way, was looking hot! Running dozens of miles a week will do that for you, I suppose.
I took a break from doing homework (there’s only so long you can stare at the same assignments, not having any breakthroughs, before you need a change of scenery) to help clean out the walk-in closet in his office. It wasn’t his stuff – it was our stuff, and it all needed to go into the filing cabinets that we got for free. Well, a lot of it needed to get thrown away, too. Only one box left!
My grandpa starts dialysis this week, and is still in the same nursing home. There’s a meeting this week to discuss long-term care, which sounds promising to me.
I hope to have a new Facebook picture soon – I finally got new glasses and they should come in by Wednesday. That’s worthy of an updated photo, right? I’m still using one from our wedding, because it’s one of the more recent good photos of myself that I have. Blah. Did I always have an aversion to getting my photo taken? These days I usually feel like a big dork when a camera is pointed in my direction.
It is a billion degrees in my office, and on a day where I dressed for it to be cold (like it usually is). I’m not feeling well as a result. Maybe lunch will help.
I’ll post pictures from the big snow storm tomorrow (or tonight, if I need to procrastinate and avoid doing homework). I think I got some good shots.
