Friday Fill-Ins

  1. It’s time for a new desktop wallpaper, I think.
  2. Most days, I really enjoy Tastespotting; it’s not a bad place for inspiration, if you really can’t decide what to make for Grandma, her boyfriend, and for lunch a week from Saturday. [Editor’s note: Good Lord, I just realized that maybe ‘s boyfriend is also coming. Both boyfriends have the same name. And I’m having a very difficult time figuring out what can be made in advance but still be fancy enough for lunch with Grandma, if you know what I mean. Maybe you don’t. But if you know my grandma, you know.
  3. I must be the friendliest person ever while asleep – the cats just adore me and I frequently half-wake-up and pet them for a few minutes. What’s up with that? That’s probably why I’m so grumpy upon waking up.
  4. Grace is the best thing I have ever known.
  5. My cat is simply stupid and worrisome; didn’t she ever hear that curiosity killed the cat?*
  6. The last time I laughed really loudly was when I read what Ohio prohibits on Sundays.
  7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to opening a bottle of wine, tomorrow my plans include a hair appointment and getting the basement rooms ready for guests and Sunday, I want to relax, or use my sewing machine (it’s a toss-up)!

*This morning, we could not find . It was odd that she didn’t come out when they were fed (she’s always starving), and she didn’t sleep at my foot of the bed like usual. We looked all around the house to no avail. went outside to look (which is just a horrifying prospect, her getting out), while I tried to think of the places that she tries to get inside of. She wasn’t in the closet that leads to the attic, but she was in the hall closet that holds my bathroom stuff. She was very thankful to be let out (though she hadn’t made a noise before that, or perhaps she did – her mew is very small), starving, and I don’t think she left any messes in the closet. I’d like to think that this experience will stop her the next time she tries to get in that closet (which is every single time I open it, always a different shelf that needs exploring), but I doubt that will be the case. She probably got the best sleep she’s had in years – all that dark, coziness with a closed door, in a very small space? (She is quite shy and skittish.) Needless to say, I missed my bus.

Notice how I didn’t say that I felt bad about it (her getting locked in the closet overnight, that is)?

Thankful

Today, it’s for…

… Hershey’s bars.

… Post-It Notes.

… dangly earrings.

… a second computer sitting in my cube right now.

… the big hole in the ground on the south side of the house (it means no more digging up rocks).

… the haircut I have scheduled for Saturday.

… visits from extended family and faraway friends.

… a few moments of sleep last night not spent being accosted by the cats (though I’m not really sure when or how long that was).

… linen pants.

… the new broom we bought last night (is that sad that I’m thankful for a broom? or just really boring?).

… Amazon.com sales and previously-owned [music] books.

… not having to run to the bus stop this morning.

… heartburn that didn’t last all day (hey, it’s an improvement).

… diet [soda] pop.

You?

Isn’t it time to name a plant after me or something?

I’ll let you in on a little secret: While compared to the general public I may appear to know a lot about computer-related stuff, I really don’t. I mean, I know some stuff, and you could probably classify me as a Word “Power User,” and I can make my way around Access. But really? What appears to be computer prowess is actually… bravery and guessing. I do a lot of “what happens when I hit this button?” “What happens when I click here?” “What happens…?” You get the idea. Also, the internet is a great source of information. Did you know that? [Sidenote: there are occasions when I find myself unable to solve a problem that I have, and there is no one to turn to for help. It is at this point that I am quite frustrated with 1) all the knowledge I do have, 2) my inability to fix said problem, and 3) no one around me having any idea what I'm talking about.]

Now, lest you think I walk around telling people how awesome I am at all things computer-related, let me be clear. I frequently attempt to tell others that I know absolutely nothing about [insert problem here]. Examples: networks, Groupwise, Internet Explorer. Alas, while this usually makes someone who was seeking my help go away, it’s only temporary. It is rare that someone remembers that I said, “I have no idea; go ask —-.” They just keep asking me.

And that’s fine, really, because every once in a while I’m rewarded with someone actually remembering the thing I taught them last time (and so they’ve consequently come up with a harder problem to solve), and people are always grateful when you fix their computer problems (unless, of course, you’re actually in IT – if you’re expected to do that stuff as part of your job, people tend to get snippy).

All that to say, I generally don’t think too highly of my computer abilities. I consider myself “above average,” but “average” is not very computer literate (in the general workforce, in my experience).

So, when someone comes to me and says, “can we do this on our website?” and I tell them, “I have absolutely no idea why it works the way it does, and I’m pretty sure I can’t make it do something different,” I’m fairly confident that I’m right. If that’s confusing, let me say it another way. If you ask me to change the way a list looks on a web page, and I tell you that it’s just borrowed javascript code that I don’t understand so I probably can’t do anything for you, you’re pretty much sunk, unless you want to find someone else who can do it (good luck with that).

Today I was presented with such an occurrence (quite everyday, really). One one of our web pages, I have a list that expands and collapses depending on where you click. I totally took some javascript from the internet and used it, and I have no idea how/why it works. It just does. I can make it do… exactly what it does. Nothing more. But someone wanted… spacing. And primary list items that were links (not expanding). And I was all, “yeah, I’ll look into that, but I don’t think I can make that happen for you.”

And then (here’s where it gets interesting, if you can call this story interesting, which you can’t; it’s just long and rambly and probably no one has made it this far), something amazing happened. I opened up my web page editing program, and I copy-pasted some stuff and moved some other stuff around and made up some CSS, and… miracle of miracles, I made it do exactly what I was requested to.

The moral of the story: click on that button and see what happens. Or just try something to see if it works. Experiment with your computer. It’s unlikely that you’ll actually break it (unless, of course, you go surfing the internet and get some viruses, in which case you’re totally on your own). You will be amazed at what you discover you can do. Really.

[My apologies for the super boring story. It really was quite exciting to add some spacing into a list. There may or may not have been a short victory dance in my cube.]

A little yardwork

One of my aunts was in town last week, and so she came over with to see our new house. As a housewarming gift, she gave us a color-changing hydrangea (they’re so cool – check out this website for info), which would live best on the south side of the house (full sun and all). pointed out that it would look best right where the hideously ugly rose bushes (that were slated to be removed next year) reside. And thus, yard work was created.

garden2

If you'll remember, this is what the rose bushes (and lilac bushes) looked like.

So on Saturday, while started pruning the lilac bushes (more on that later in the week), I trimmed the roses back to stumps. These were particularly nasty roses, as they were super-thorny and couldn’t be touched anywhere but on the leaves.

south_garden2

Rose bushes cut down to stumps.

Sunday, we dug out those stumps. To be fair, dug out the left two, and I can only take credit for the one on the right.

Rose bush stumps removed.

And that’s where I’ll have to end this story today (because that’s where my pictures end). Be assured, we have more plans, and I’ll have a picture of our new hydrangea bush soon.

Getting Caught Up

I have received (via swaps) several awesome quilts in the past few months that I have failed to blog about, mostly because I didn’t have pictures. I have now remedied the picture situation, so here are the beauties (details about who made them, etc are available if you click-through to Flickr):

Lastly, I want to show off my most recently finished quilt (about five days after the one above). This was a test pattern and I hope to talk about it more soon, but for now I’ll just show it off:

Now I just have to work on a [better] system to display all my lovely mini quilts. I have an idea, but I’m not sure about it yet….

Friday Fill-Ins

  1. Calm down, it is not the end of the world.
  2. Sitting here, listening to the sound of rain falling, I want to take a nap.
  3. Licorice tastes so good!
  4. Sometimes, putting others first is darn near impossible.
  5. The ocean is breathtaking, really. This is especially true for those of us who have lived 98% of our lives in land-locked states.
  6. Well, maybe there is an end to the tunnel.
  7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to not ironing, tomorrow my plans include ripping out some really ugly rose bushes (with some help, of course) and Sunday, I want to make some textiles for my bathroom and the living room!

Bookmarks for today

Some things I’ve bookmarked recently:

  • Top 100 How to say – I’m only posting this because #1 is so very funny. The rest, not so much (and enough vulgarity to last me for a while), but #1… great laugh. Also, #10. And #35, because it’s grammatically incorrect. And #61 (why is that popular?).

Sad, but True

I have absolutely nothing of interest to blog about.

Nothing.

Hence the multi-day hiatus.

It’s ‘s birthday today. And one of my aunts is in town for the week, visiting her. They’ll be stopping by our house at some point, but I don’t know when, and I don’t know if we’re supposed to be serving them dinner, or how long they’re staying.

But really, I’ve got nothing. I’m even boring myself right now.

Ellipses

I am…

…desperately in need of a haircut.

… quite bored.

… pretending to be in charge today. Sadly, that too is boring.

… in need of a birthday gift for (whose birthday is Tuesday).

… being ignored by several of my advisors at Metro State. At the moment, it appears that I am taking the fall off, which is not what I want.

I have…

… almost completed the top of the test quilt. Just one strip left to sew on (but it was 10:40 and I needed to go to bed).

… disconnected my Twitter account from Facebook. Now I need to come up with two (!) clever things to say each morning. On the up side, it means I can Twitter things that I don’t want to appear on Facebook.

… eaten far too many Caramel Nut Clusters this week, and I don’t care. Also, I have had an apple with Nutella for lunch every day this week.

… sent at least one snarky email today.

… collected quite a few Twitter followers. And by “quite a few,” I mean that more are following me than I am following. And they’re not all spammers, either.

I will…

… be spending part of this weekend at a cabin [almost] on a lake (‘s mom’s). Since it is unseasonably cold, I’m starting to doubt that there will be any boating.

… hopefully get to take a nap on Sunday afternoon. *fingers crossed*

… try a bit harder not to be annoyed with all the [loud] conversation that is happening in the office today. What happened to my [almost uncomfortably] quiet office?

… find something creative to do on the drive to Wisconsin. I had hoped it would be sewing the binding on the quilt, but I’m not at that stage yet.

Friday Fill-Ins

  1. Noodles and butter / garlic / Parmesan cheese make a quick and easy dinner.
  2. Legends is the book I’m reading right now.
  3. July brings back memories of family camping.
  4. That I should have gotten more sleep was obvious.
  5. They say if you tell your dreams people will think you are boring, and will stop wanting to talk to you.
  6. I sometimes need a while to think it over.
  7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to getting away from the house (still love it, but “home” means projects, and it’s good to have a break), tomorrow my plans include relaxing up at the cabin and Sunday, I want to finish the Robert Kaufman quilt!

Thankful

Today, I’m thankful for…

… baby pictures that arrive in my mailbox.

… nice weather to enjoy time outside.

… ponytail holders (it’s windy out!).

… RSS feeds (they make everything easier!).

… deep, cleansing breaths.

… pretty fabric.

… the layout of the quilt I’m working on – it wasn’t that hard to figure out.

… toothbrushes.

… the small bit of living green stuff that survives here in my cubicle (bamboo from Ikea).

… the Walgreens downtown.

… the world getting a little smaller every day.

… no more raw potsticker filling in my fridge (made up 51 last night, and now it’s gone).

… Band-Aids.

… fresh air.

And you? What are you thankful for?
