Five on Friday

  1. Given a choice, and imagining that money and time were no object, would you rather cook dinner, eat out or order in? Order in – the best of both worlds. Someone else does all the cooking, but I still get to eat in bed while watching TV.
  2. What is the most elaborate meal you’ve ever prepared yourself or purchased at a restaurant? Two Thanksgivings ago, I shunned all celebrations and had a day all to myself. I made Cornish hen with wild rice and spinach stuffing, and … a whole bunch of other stuff. And I drank an entire bottle of wine over the course of the day and never felt its effects. That was a good holiday.
  3. What food do you find yourself making and/or eating way too much? Chef Boyardee Ravioli. Because I’m not 8 years old anymore. But it’s sooooo good.
  4. What was your most disastrous cooking/eating out experience? Oh, I have had way too many disastrous cooking experiences in my life. I am 1) not very good at reading recipes and tend to forget ingredients, do steps in the wrong order, or otherwise mess up, and 2) always wanting to “slightly” change the recipe and experiment. As you can imagine, this does not always turn out well. There’s a story from my childhood (OK, I was a teenager – once and I hit a certain age, we had to come up with one dinner idea per week for the family menu, and also cook dinner once per week) where I made muffins, but forgot to put in the leavening ingredient, and I made little hockey pucks. That’s just the first one that comes to my mind.
  5. Would you rather cook for someone else or have them cook for you? I think both are fun. It’s nice when someone else wants to do something nice for you, but it’s also nice to be able to make someone else happy with your efforts.
